Watching too much YouTube? Now you can set reminders to urge you take a break or go to bed. 

Introduction

'One more video, and I’ll go sleep.' The next moment you check the time – it’s 2 am and way over your bedtime.  It is easy to get suck into the rabbit hole while watching videos on YouTube or using other social media apps. 

As of 2019, the average daily social media usage of internet users worldwide is 144 minutes per day. That is over 2 hours of your time everyday spend browsing YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and so on.

While it is in the best interest of social media companies to encourage users to spend more time on their site, they also recognize their role as a socially responsible company to ‘limit’ the screen time on their app or website. 

YouTube introduced a new bedtime reminders feature just this week. It allows the user to set a reminder to prompt you to go to bed. Also, there is a break reminder if you have been binge-watching for hours.  Of course, these functions only work if you have the discipline to put down your phone. Nevertheless, it gives the user additional features to remind them of life outside the internet.


Below is a quick guide how you can get it setup in your device. 
1. Log in to your YouTube account and tap on your profile located on the top right on the home screen.  
2. Tap on 'Time watched'. You can see how much time you have watch today and the last seven days.
3. Toggle the switch 'Remind me to take a break' will shows you a timer. Your video will pause at that interval until you dismiss it or resume playing the video. 
4. Bedtime Reminder let you set reminders at specific times to stop watching videos and go to bed. You will be able to dismiss or snooze the reminder.

There are many ways to reduce screen time. These tools are only effective if you are determine to use your time carefully. Cutting down on your social media usage enable you to revive hobbies or skills that you been wanting to pick up.
